Automattic, a WordPress development company, introduced a new platform focused on small and medium-sized news sites.

A project called Newspack by, launched in partnership with News Revenue Hub and Spirited Media. The platform received $2.4 million in funding from a number of major companies including Google ($1.2 million, via the Google News Initiative), Lenfest Institute for Journalism ($400,000), ConsenSys ($350,000) and the John and James Knight Foundation ($250,000). Another $ 200k will be transferred later this month.

Newspack aims to free small news resources around the world from such concerns as “technology selection, website development and support, hosting and security”.

At the moment, the new platform is at the stage of a pilot project. The closed beta will be launched in July 2019. At this stage, it will be used by about 10 sites. Applications from publishers will be accepted until February 1.

What functionality will be available to users of Newspack is not yet specified. According to Automattic, the new platform will combine the best editorial and business practices used in the media.

The development period will last until the end of January 2020, after which the platform will be open to approximately 60 publications.

At the pre-launch stage, the platform will be funded exclusively by Automattic and its partners. After the official launch, Newspack users will pay about $ 1-2 thousand each month.
